Featherings
Featherings
The feather drifted into my studio not as ephemera but as material; like a sliver of graphite — a mark drawn through air, a stroke without surface. It evolved to be less ornament and more instrument, a reminder that form can hold power without weight, and sparked a fundamental recalibration of my practice — lightest touch, greatest impact.
Feathering is an endless unique multiple, an ongoing private studio ritual. A feather, barely held, suspended from a 12" needle — seemingly to test one's faith in gravity. Balance is rendered as a hushed standoff, stillness as trembling intent, reifying forces greater than ourselves. Feathering strikes that moment when matter hesitates, and behaves like thought.
Magical in its simplicity, a gentle tap of the needle to the wall installs the piece. Elegant and poetic as a single objet d’art, powerful as constellations, each installation is unique and site-specific, distinct yet connected — a silent chime in a language more universal than speech.
Each Feathering ships ready to install with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
Materials & Process:
Each feathering measures approximately 12”-18”; composed of natural feather, brass rod, fine brass rod, waxed poly-filament thread, and suspended from the eye of a 12” stainless steel upholsterer’s needle. All knots are double wrapped clove hitches, finished with a surgeon’s knot.
Your order ships in a single protective mailing tube, internally wrapped in soft paper. Simply open an endcap, pull the paper and it’s contents from the tube and peel it away to discover your piece
To install: simply tap the needle lightly into a wall (careful not to hit the feather). The entire spirit of the piece is very forgiving, but I have found it best to have the width of the needle’s eye running vertically (perpendicular to the floor). If necessary the angle of the feathering can adjusted by gently sliding the knot at the balance point.
